The Garden At Edenhouse

< Back to activities

“A great joy was time to contemplate the creation of a garden whilst Edenhouse was being constructed.  The topography influenced the layout along naturalistic lines with plenty of curves and sweeping vistas.  There is no rigid formality although all areas are manicured giving the impression of elegance.

Development started with broad borders (now even broader) of mainly shrubs under-planted with perennials. Favourites were included in abundance – hellebores, solomon seal, lily of the valley, bluebells, foxgloves, roses, and wisteria. Buxus, pittosporums and phormium created winter framework.

Gullies were cleared and planted with gunneras, iris sibirica, hostas and hydrangeas. Next came the vegetable garden, then a red border with planting for native birds. Orchards, olive groves and a woodland were incorporated into the ever-expanding grounds, which now envelop about 6 acres of the 50-acre property”.
